One Year Old (and smash cake pictures)

Semmes is one today!  Happy birthday!  He is 23 pounds and 28.5 inches.  25th-50th percentile for weight, 10th for height, and 90th percentile for head circumference. He takes one (on really good days two) nap a day and sleeps eleven-twelve hours overnight.  He still nurses 4-5 times a day and eats three full meals of solid food and usually a snack.  He LOVES to eat.

He likes baths, books (The Very Hungry Caterpillar is his new favorite), this John Deere farmer he carries around everywhere, any ball he can get his hand on, and Leffe.  He is still OBSESSED with Leffe.

He's walking everywhere.  He started walking about three weeks ago.  He can now plant one foot and pivot to turn around.  He can go from laying on his back all the way to standing and walking without pulling up on something.  No real words yet, but he "talks." A lot.  And he has found his loud, outside voice.  He knows his name, what no means, and what "dog" is.  He also likes to bring you things.  This is actually really helpful when he gets something he's not supposed to have.  He'll just toddle over and hand it to you.

He is ticklish everywhere: tummy, knees, the bottom of his feet, etc.  He gets mad if you take something away or tell him no.  And he throws epic, lay on the floor and sob, temper tantrums occasionally.  On the other hand, after he wakes up from a nap, he loves to hug and snuggle for a few minutes before he starts playing.  Cutest thing ever.

See the farmer he's holding?  Loves that thing.

Yesterday, we did smash cake pictures.  I thought he would LOVE cake.  Have you seen this kid eat?  But no.  He really wasn't into it.  But at least we got some really good pictures!!!

First, we took some in his birthday outfit.

The cake:

I found this really cute plate that totally matched the color scheme.  And what does Semmes do?  Immediately dump the cake off of the plate.

Yay!  No more plate!

He was more interested in the birthday hat (that he refused to wear) than in the cake.

I finally just tore a chunk off so he'd eat some.

We even had to manufacture the icing on the leg because he was just so neat!

It was a fun afternoon.  I just can't believe he's already one!

A quick, sweet story

Yesterday was the first day of Spring, officially.  Thank goodness; I am over this winter.  It was a gorgeous day.  So after the boys got home from school, we went next door and sat outside in the sun with our neighbors.  About 5 o'clock, the sun was starting to go behind the house and it was cooling down.  Cooper got a little upset, so I picked him up and was hugging on him.  Semmes toddled over and started patting Cooper on the back.  Then he laid his head on Cooper's back, like he was hugging him so he'd feel better.  So I reached over and gathered Semmes to me as well, and we had a little group hug.  It was just such a sweet moment.  I love my boys...and my neighbors who treat my boys like they're their own grandchildren.

Something amazing happened...Cooper took steps!!

Ya'll.  OMG.  Cooper is taking steps.  Two days in a row!  And now there's video!  His therapist is holding his hands down on the walker, but that's it.  He's supporting his own weight, he's taking steps, he's moving forward!  This is AWESOME!! P.S. It's in two pieces so they could send it to me.

Cooper is "retarded"

Yep, you read that correctly.  Since Cooper's IQ is below 70, he would've been classified, at least until last year when President Obama officially got rid of the term, as mentally retarded.  Cooper: my sweet, strong, innocent, awesome, amazing, wonderful child.  So the next time you want to call someone "retarded" or say that something is "retarded," I want you to ask yourself this: "Is this like Cooper?"  And if the answer is "no," you need to use a better, more correct term.  Get creative, people!  You can do better than "retarded!"  Here are some alternatives:
